News from the AM scene with Dr. Bähr from Jeol, who will be talking about "Electron Beam Melting (PBF-EB/M) - Pure Tungsten Processing & In-situ BSE Process Monitoring".
The powder bed fusion of metals using an electron beam (PBFEB/M) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process that offers advantages over other manufacturing methods for processing crack-prone, high-melting-point, or highly reactive materials. These advantages are due, among other things, to the vacuum environment and the high process and preheating temperatures. One material that has recently attracted considerable interest for processing using PBF-EB/M in various applications is tungsten. The first part of this presentation will introduce a modified PBF-EB/M process route that enables the production of crack-free, highdensity tungsten components. As part of the presentation, necessary machine and process modifications will be explained and relevant component properties obtained will be discussed. The second part of the presentation will provide an outlook on in-situ process monitoring using backscattered electron detection. This method allows layer-by-layer detection of defects and can contribute to quality assurance in the future.
Dr.-Ing. Siegfried Bähr, Applications Specialist Additive Manufacturing
About the speaker:
Dr. Siegfried Bähr has been working as an AF application specialist at JEOL (Germany) GmbH since the middle of this year and has more than seven years of experience in the industry. From 2019 to 2025, he worked at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich, most recently as a senior AF engineer specializing in the process groups “powder bed fusion” and “directed energy deposition.” In 2025, he earned his doctorate with a thesis on the influence of process gases in laser beam melting. At JEOL , Dr. Bähr supports market development in Europe and assists customers withmachine demonstrations, training, and support through to the utilization phase.
