On 1 July 2021, the Germany-wide home office obligation ended. The falling infection figures and rising vaccination rates are the reasons for this. Working from home developed successfully in many cases after initial teething problems. According to a recent survey by the Economic and Social Research Institute (WSI), about half of the respondents would like to continue working from home in the future. There are also indications from the corporate side that hybrid work concepts with a mix of work components in and outside the company will emerge in the long term.

The corona pandemic has given a boost to home office and mobile working in Germany. According to a flash survey on home office and mobile working with 1,004 VDMA member companies from January 2021, about 30 per cent of the workforce worked on a mobile basis. For many companies, this has changed the structure, management and collaboration. Digitalisation and the competence and work culture required for this will also be of central importance after the corona pandemic.

In the event, the opportunities and challenges of home office and mobile working for work culture, structure and leadership will be elaborated and reflected. A practical example of implementation is provided by the company Gebr. Becker GmbH from Wuppertal. Internally, the company quickly adapted to the new situation and implemented mobile working for those colleagues where it was possible. Gebr. Becker has also already drawn up concrete implementation proposals for mobile working in the future.

By the way: in order to get a better picture of the mood in NRW regarding the pandemic-related experiences in dealing with home office and mobile working, the VDMA has set up a new survey in cooperation with ProduktionNRW. You are welcome to participate in the survey in preparation for the event. Your data will be treated confidentially and the evaluation will be anonymous: Link to survey
