Industrial & Product Security in Mechanical and Plant Engineering
Cyberattacks on industrial companies have been on the rise for years—often with severe consequences for production, competitiveness, and reputation. For the mechanical and plant engineering sector, there is an additional factor: highly automated production environments, connected machinery, IoT services, and digital business models are expanding the attack surface for cyber threats across the entire product life cycle. At the same time, regulatory requirements for corporate cyber resilience are increasing within the EU. For VDMA members, this means that Industrial Security and Product Security must be embedded in a structured, standards-based, and auditable manner across the organization, development, operations, and service. Given the sometimes enormous losses caused by cyber incidents, cyber insurance is also becoming increasingly relevant for companies. Against this backdrop, VDMA Austria is hosting a full-day peer exchange on Industrial & Product Security on 5 March 2026. The event will take place at Beckhoff Automation in Vienna, and we cordially invite you to attend.

The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which entered into force at the end of 2024, introduces mandatory cybersecurity requirements for “products with digital elements”, making it relevant for most machine and component manufacturers. It foresees initial reporting obligations from September 2026 and will apply in full from December 2027. By contrast, the European NIS2 Directive was only transposed into Austrian law at the end of 2025 through the Network and Information Systems Security Act 2026 (NISG 2026). NISG 2026 specifies obligations, deadlines, and reporting channels and, from its entry into force on 1 October 2026, will impose mandatory security measures and incident reporting on thousands of Austrian companies—including requirements related to supply chain security.
At this event, experts from the VDMA Software and Digitalization Association, our host Beckhoff, and the renowned law firm Eversheds Sutherland will present and contextualize the practical implementation of CRA and NIS2—for example, how compliance can be achieved using established standards—as well as the specifics of the Austrian NISG 2026. Immediately afterwards, you will receive an overview of “Cyber risk insurance in mechanical and plant engineering”, presented by the sector-specific insurance agency VSMA and its partner Finlex. In the afternoon, two concrete use cases on industrial cybersecurity—along with lessons learned—will be presented by ReqPOOL and PILZ.
The agenda will be rounded off with a joint lunch at the restaurant “Kiss, the Cook”, kindly hosted by Beckhoff, and a short tour of the Robotics Competence Center at Beckhoff’s Vienna office. There will also be enough time for networking and personal exchange among practitioners.
And if you are able to arrive a little earlier in the morning, we would be delighted to welcome you to the Beckhoff Business Breakfast as well. It starts at 7:30 a.m. and also takes place at “Kiss, the Cook” on the ground floor of the SATURN Tower. All VDMA members and guests may attend without additional registration.
