As an export market, China is of enormous importance to the mechanical and plant engineering industry and has been in a neck-and-neck race with the USA for the top spot in the export rankings for years.

As an export market, China is of enormous importance to the mechanical and plant engineering industry. For years, the People's Republic has been in a neck-and-neck race with the USA for the top spot in the export rankings. With 3.4 billion euros in sales, China was the top export market in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019. In 2015, China launched the industrial policy initiative "Made in China 2025" with the aim of becoming a leading technology nation. The selected high-tech industries also include sectors in which German companies are traditionally strong and which are of great importance to Germany as an export nation, such as mechanical and plant engineering.

The new study "What China's industrial policy means for the German economy - Scenarios for "Made in China 2025" using the example of German mechanical engineering" by the Bertelsmann Foundation in cooperation with the VDMA and with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI analyzes the development up to the year 2030 in several scenarios. The core result is: If the growth of the Chinese machinery market continues as in the past years, the machinery and plant engineering industry will still achieve a high export volume to the People's Republic in 2030. However, even the scenarios that are positive for us point to stagnation in machinery exports to China from the middle of the decade. If China manages to achieve the targeted high technology level by 2025, machinery exports from Germany could fall back to the export level of 2019 from the middle of the decade.

During the event, Bernhard Bartsch (Senior Expert, Bertelsmann Stiftung) will present the study and Claudia Barkowsky (Chief Representative, VDMA Liaison Office China) will report on the current situation from China.

The event is aimed at everyone in the company who is involved in business with China: Management, sales and service management.
